The foundation of the Christian life is built on Christ. Therefore, the believers lifestyle should exemplify Christ in word and actions. In other words, its not just whom we are in Christ that matters but also what we say and does. By their fruits you shall know them. Matt. 7:20. True Christianity is evidenced by conduct. So the issue of Christian Character is very important in the life of a believer.
The question now is, if Christian character is so important how then do we develop a good Christian character. The followings are the ways to develop a good Christian character:
Studying the Word of God Col.3:16; Ps.1:1-2; Rom.12:1-2.
It is his Word that reveals His will to us. Therefore, a believer who desires to develop his character must be close to the Word. Also every opportunity at your disposal to hear, meditate or share Gods Word should be effectively and wisely utilized. Joshua 1; 7, 8, Gods Word is His law. Meditation takes place in the heart. The closer you move with the Word, the more you will want to do what pleases Him.
Dependence on the Holy Spirit Rom.8:26
This is to say He is the one who enables you to do the Word. You need strength and power to do the Word. This will come after the Holy Spirit comes upon you and not before. It is important to learn praying in the Holy Ghost. As you do this, your spirit grows (Jude 20).
Determination
This is a requirement to develop our Christian Character. It means being made up or to have decided on a particular thing.Believers are creatures of choice, they have right to decide and to choose what they want. Determination comes from the heart because it is a matter of the heart e.g Daniel, Joseph and Job.
Keeping Wise Company. I Cor.15:33; 2 Cor.6:18
The type of company you keep either weakens or strengthens you. In Proverbs 13:20, He that walked with wise men, shall be wise In other words, foolishness leads to destruction. Iron sharpeneth iron. Prov.27:17. So wisdom demands you go to where you can be sharpened. Keep company with the wise – those that encourage you.
Acting On The Word
If you hear and you dont put it into practice, you are not a doer of the Word, James 1:22. The process is not complete until you put into practice the Word. In essence, your life, actions and character will be a witness, 1 Corinthians 10:31.
